I love traditional braces. I think they work the best because I get to control the movement. A lot of people like the Invisalign route, but with Invisalign, there’s patient compliance, meaning they have to be the ones wearing the treatment.
So I can do my part, but the patient has to do their part. With traditional braces, I always tell the patient, you have no homework. I do all the work, you get to enjoy life.
And I get to know how long the treatment will take because there’s no patient interaction with that. So I like to see where I’m putting the tooth and where I’m moving it. And I think that’s the benefits of braces over Invisalign.
A lot of complex cases are better treated with braces than Invisalign because we get to put the brackets in a specific place and make sure the movement’s accurate. With Invisalign, it’s always not guaranteed because we have a plastic piece of Invisalign trying to move that tooth into a certain spot. And sometimes the force is not enough.
With braces, I can determine where that tooth is going and how much force I can add to it. Brushing your teeth with braces is a challenge, but I always like to say it’s not about the type of toothbrush you have, it’s about the quality of time you spend on your teeth. You can have the cheapest toothbrush, you can have the most expensive toothbrush.
They both do the same job. We try to teach the patient on the technique on how to brush their teeth. So, you know, circular movements, you know, using a water faucet to get in between the braces and just spending two minutes of quality time.
Now, it all depends on the patient, right? If you’re someone that’s an easier case, sometimes your treatment can last up to 12 months. I always like to say though, the average is 18 to 24 months.
