Meet Dr. Mary Jaddou
I always knew I wanted a career where I could get to work closely with patients and really make a positive impact on their lives. Once I discovered the field of orthodontics, I knew it was a perfect fit for me. What really drew me to orthodontics really is the transformative aspect of it, the way I’m able to, you know, change people’s smiles, but more importantly make them feel more confident about themselves.
I was very fortunate to complete my undergrad dental school and orthodontic residency all at the University of Detroit Mercy. I think the most transformative parts of my education were the orthodontic residency itself. I really was able to learn how kids grow, learn different appliances to use in orthodontics, and something I love about orthodontics is the way it’s always changing.
To stay current, really, I go to continued education courses, I go to conferences, I talk with Dr. Kammo about hard cases. I think staying current is really a big deal in orthodontics and there’s always something new. My goal is to always make treatment more comfortable and just more efficient if possible for my patients.
I always want, you know, treatment to be a two-way street. I never want orthodontic treatment for a patient to feel like one size fits all. I want my patients to be part of the decision-making process and I feel as though if I ask the right questions and they feel comfortable with me, we can really get to that goal.
So I love working with kids and teens. They bring a whole different vibe to the office, a whole different perspective. My main goal is for them to feel comfortable in the office.
A big part of them feeling comfortable is that they’re going to get the best out of their treatment possible because patient compliance is a big part of it. So, you know, if the patient likes the office, likes me, is comfortable, they’ll have a better outcome to their treatment because they’ll be doing, you know, the things that I tell them in a better way. When I take braces off on a patient, that is the best part of my job.
That’s what makes me the most excited, especially when I pull up the before photos and they really see, you know, how they started. It’s just an amazing feeling. Even for me, sometimes I forget, like, really how did this patient start treatment? So when I pull up those photos and, you know, I get to learn from cases with the patient, it’s so amazing and it’s so satisfying and I can just see their confidence growing from the minute they walk out the door.
So it’s really beautiful. Maintaining a strong work-life balance is really important to me. So I enjoy hanging out with my family and friends, watching Detroit sports, working out, all those things.
Right now, my main priority is actually I’m having a baby boy in August. So I’m super excited for that. I think being a mother is really going to help me become a better orthodontist because I’ll be able to relate to patients better and I’ll really have a better idea of what they’re going through.
