Dr. Mary on How Invisalign Works
Invisalign is awesome. Invisalign gives us orthodontists a different way of treating patients. Back in the day, just the only option really was braces.
So with Invisalign, it’s trays that you put in your mouth that you switch every one to two weeks depending on your treatment. They’re very aesthetic, they move teeth really nicely, but it relies a lot on patient compliance. So if you’re a teen, sometimes, you know, maybe we’d rather treat you with braces.
But if you’re really responsible, then we can do aligners too. It’s a great treatment option, and most of the times, you get the same results as braces do. With clear aligners, the way it moves teeth is you’re changing your trays every week.
In each tray, there’s different movements going on. So as you progress in your treatment, your teeth will be moving with your trays. So that’s different in the sense of braces.
I put the braces on, and I kind of know how the teeth are gonna move. But with clear aligners, a lot of it is dependent on you and how you wear your trays. A lot of my Invisalign patients are adults just wanting straight teeth.
But I always tell patients, it’s really more than just straightening your teeth. If we align everything, if we correct your bite, you’re gonna be able to floss better, you’re gonna be able to brush better, you’re gonna have less wear on your teeth. My goal is not to just give you straight teeth, but function is also a big thing too.
Function is important for your health and well-being because if you have crooked teeth, a lot of times it’s really hard to get into those contacts, to floss, to brush. So if we help align your teeth, your overall health is just gonna be a lot better.
